What lies ahead for group D!

Ghana (with 4 points) meets Germany on June 23 21:30 GMT+3, and for them to qualify for the next round; they will have to beat Germany for a guaranteed spot. A draw for them will still not be bad, but they will finish second (if Serbia beats Australia) in group D. A lose will not be good news. For Germany(with 3 points);if they win over Ghana, then they have a guaranteed spot for the round of 16. A draw or a lose will spell dome for them,as mathematics will apply if Serbia and Australia draw or if Serbia loses. Serbia(with 3 points now) will play Australia on 23 June at 21:30 GMT+3, have no other option than to beat the Soceroos. A draw for them, will depend on the results from Ghana vs Germany, hoping that Ghana wins. A lose will send them straight to Berlin. As for Australia(who are bottom with 1 point) their hopes depend on miracles and sheer luck; one thing for sure, they have nothing but a win, for them to qualify. If they win, they will hope that Ghana beats Germany or drew and the calculator will be fished out to determine their fate. It's tough, with Ghana placed on the better side...

Cameroon confirms exit. Denmark 2-1 Cameroon

It all started with the captain with the capital 'C' striking first- Sam Etoo- @ the 10 minute at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The lions prevailed most of the first and second half with deadly shots and opportunities, but that one goal was just it for them. The usual suspect of Arsenal, the scorer of important goals-Nicklas Bendtner- tapped in at the 33' minute to level it for his team. Then came the 61' minute, Dennis Rommedahl(AJax Amsterdam) slipped it into the basket beautifully to seal the victory for the Dens, closing out the Lions from the party. This means that, Cameroon enters into this historic world cup books as the first team to exit the tourney. Fulltime score Denmark 2-1 Cameroon

10 man soceroos hold The Black Stars! Ghana 1-1 Australia

Brett Holman(AZ Alkmaar) became the first to kiss the net @ 11' minute, when a free kick from Mark Bresciano(Palermo) which virtually seemed easy for Kingston, but after the ball bounced, it confused the keeper who punched it into Holman who drove it home via a rebound! Minute 23' came and Ghana got a penalty after John Mensah's(Lyon) hot strike was blocked by Harry Kewell(Galatasaray) using his hand, awarding himself a red card and awarding the Black Stars a penalty. Asamoah Gyan(Rennes) rose to the occasion and sent Mark Schwarzer(Fulham) to the wrong side, scoring the equalizer. The went on, but no other goal was scored, although Ghana came close severally. Final score Ghana 1-1 Australia! A very tricky group.

Netherlands squeeze 3 points from Japan to qualify. Ned 1-0 Jap

Netherland becomes the second team to qualify after Argentina. Wesley Sneijder (Intermilan) brilliantly struck from miles away to give the Neds the lead and guaranteed qualification. Although Japan displayed a good game with super ball possession, they could not get the net. Netherlands 1-0 Japan. Player of the match Japanese midfielder Daisuke Matsui (Grenoble), he did his best for the team.

The Three Lions held by The Derset Foxes. ENG 0-0 ALG

England and Algeria showed that potential of scoring, but it all ended potent. The Algerian defence proved an African shield, with the Algerian GoalKeeper being tough to the point, doing enough to ensure that the Lions didnt score. Beautiful game, NO SCORE! This therefore means that; Slovenia-who top group C with 4 points- will only need a draw in their next match with England to qualify. England-with 2 points-will have to beat Slovenia to qualify. The US-who have 2 points-will hope that Slovenia beats England, as they win over Algeria to get into the round of 16. Algeria-who are currently at the bottom of the group with 1 point-will hope for nothing but a win over the US as Slovenia beats England, for them to get into the next round. Too much to hope for, all in all it's our world.

Determined USA comes level with Slov 2-2

Ellis Park Stadium (GMT+3 5pm).
A determined US side almost clinched a win when they played Slovenia earlier on today. Slovenia struck the US net twice before half time, seeming to be the side that would have escaped the park with three points. The two goals came at 13' from Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic 42'. It was after the halt time period that US came on at 48' to pull one back via Landon Donovan and the equalizer at 82' from the coach's son Michael Bradley. Maurice Edu almost sealed a victory for the Obama boys, but the ref seemed to disagree and off siding a 'clean goal'. Final score 2-2, with US proving that 'YES THEY CAN'

Germany Crashed By Serbia Germany 0-1 Serbia

Group D, 11:30 GMT, June 18, 2010
Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Serbia saw off a valiant fight back by ten-man Germany to beat their Group D rivals 1-0 in Port Elizabeth. TheGermans had Miroslav Klose sent off and Lukas Podloski missed a penalty. This therefore blows Group D wide open. Australia will be back in with a shout if they beat Ghana. Ghana will be clear favorites to top the group if they collect another three points.

quick live updates-another 2010 world cup red card-Germany

37' Astonishing scenes as Klose is sent off - second yellow card. Hechases Dejan Stankovic and brings him down. But it's hardly assault and he's pretty unfortunate to make an early exit. How will the Germans respond to going down to 10 men. hardly had the shock absorbed, than the Serbians squeezed a goal into the Germany, courtesy  of  net making it 1-0. 38' GOAL JOVANOVIC - Now Germany's task becomes even harder asSerbia go in front just seconds after the sending-off of Klose. Krasicgets to the line and crosses to the back post. Zigic wins the ball inthe air and nods down to Liverpool new boy Jovanovic on the six-yard line. He controls on his chest before beating Neuer with a close-ra...nge volley. Another major shock on the cards here now.

about zakumi the mascot

He's a fluffy young leopard with green dreadlocks and a wide smile; he's energetic, enthusiastic, sociable, self-confident and ambitious – and he loves football. Meet Zakumi, the official mascot for the 2010 Fifa World Cup™.
For 40 years, each Fifa World Cup tournament has had its own unique mascot. The first was a lion called World Cup Willie, the mascot for the 1966 event, hosted by England.
Fifa and the South Africa 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) have given the 2010 mascot a distinct personality and personal history.
Zakumi "One thing is for sure, Zakumi will be first on the dancefloor and last off it at the biggest party in the world," Fifa says on its website. "He symbolizes South Africa and the rest of the African continent through his self-confidence, pride, hospitality, social skills and warm-heartedness."

Born on 16 June 1994

The name "Zakumi" is a composition of "ZA" (South Africa's international country code) and "kumi", a ki-Swahili word that means 10. Since South Africa aims to make 2010 a truly African World Cup, the LOC decided to use a word from a language widely spoken across the continent.
Another detail worth noting is that Zakumi was born on 16 June 1994, a day and a year of great significance in South Africa.
The 16th of June 1976 saw the beginning of the Soweto youth uprising, when schoolchildren took to the streets to protest against apartheid, many of them cut down by police gunfire.
And 1994 was the year that South Africans of all races cast their votes for the first time to elect a new post-apartheid democratic government.
"The big party is in 2010, when Zakumi turns 16, but we will also have had 16 years of democracy then," says LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan said. Zakumi is therefore "the ambassador for all our hopes, dreams and aspirations in South Africa."

'Mascot with an attitude'

With the slogan "Zakumi: the mascot with an attitude", Fifa describe Zakumi's personality as lively, outgoing, adventurous and spontaneous – a "shrewd little fellow".
They say he loves to perform and always follows his instinct and intuition, and has the tendency to exaggerate.
But, say Fifa, there is one thing that's undeniable about Zakumi: he loves football. He sees it as a great way connect with others and break down language barriers.
As a sign of his undying passion for the game, he always carries his football around, using it to invite people to play with him.
Zakumi's main priority, says Fifa, is to turn the World Cup into "one huge, joyful and unforgettable party and show the thousands of international guests the warmth and spirit of the African continent."
South African soccer legend Lucas Radebe, "a close friend of Zakumi", says the leopard "wants to create a good mood for the fans and raise the excitement for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the first on African soil.
"He is a proud South African and wants to ensure that the world will come together in South Africa."

Designed and dressed in South Africa

Zakumi was designed and his costume produced exclusively in South Africa.
A number of South African companies were asked to design a mascot for the 2010 World Cup, one that would represent both South Africa and Africa as a whole. The mascot had to be easily identifiable and had to represent the World Cup in a way that would leave a lasting impression.
After a long process of elimination, Fifa decided on a design by Cape Town designer Andries Odendaal.
The costume itself was produced by Cora's Costumes of Boksburg, east of Johannesburg. Owned by Cora Simpson, the company has 22 years of experience in costume making, and has made other high-profile costumes, such as the US cartoon figures Bugs Bunny and Tweety the bird.
The man behind the actual creation of the figure is David Mbewe, who has worked with Cora's Costumes for over 20 years. After meticulously choosing the right mix of fabrics and colours, Mbewe and his assistants assembled the costume, sewing the leopard spots by hand – no easy task, Simpson said.

A well-travelled leopard

And the green hair? According to Fifa, Zakumi dyed his hair "as he felt it would be the perfect camouflage against the green of the football pitch; a bit like his rosette spots are when hunting in the wilderness!"
Zakumi has got around a fair bit over the past few years, Fifa adds, travelling the whole of Africa "where the leopard habitat is good - pretty much everywhere from open savannahs, forests, jungles to mountainous areas, even deserts.
"He has therefore learned to adapt to new environments; enjoying the diversity in nature and people across the African continent."
Since being unveiled as the 2010 World Cup mascot in September 2008, however, Zakumi has become a regular globe-trotter.
He's ridden on an open-top bus through Luxembourg, he's joined Spain's national team at a training session in Brussels ahead of a 2010 qualifying match against Belgium, and of course he's been visiting every corner of South Africa to generate excitement ahead of the first World to be played on African soil.
Don't be surprised if he pops up in your neighbourhood next ...

France thrashed 2-0 by Mexico

New Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez enhanced his burgeoning reputation with the opening goal as Mexico took a significant step towards qualification from Group A and hastened France's early exit at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Man of the Match: Carlos Salcido
A dashing performance at left back, full of pace and agility, one may have mistaken him for Patrice Evra at his best. Making penetrating runs up the pitch, Salcido was able to peg back the French attacks and was solid in defence when called upon as well

Enyeama! The real super eagle

Lionel Messi saluted a "phenomenal" display from Vincent Enyeama after the Nigeria goalkeeper produced the performance of his life to deny the Argentine forward in their Group B game on Saturday.
"The goalkeeper was phenomenal," Messi said after Argentina were limited to a 1-0 win over Nigeria at Ellis Park with Enyeama producing a series of tremendous saves to thwart the world player of the year.
"He takes all the credit. We played a great game today and created a lot of chances. We just couldn't get the second goal."
Enyeama said he needed to put on the performance of his life to deny Messi a first goal at the . Much seen from him too when Nigeria met Greece, by the lost 2-1

Bafafa lose, as their hopes deter

Group A, 18:30 GMT, June 16, 2010
Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria, South Africa
Two-goal hero Diego Forlan moved to the top of the goalscoring charts and helped Uruguay to a 3-0 victory over South Africa that leaves the World Cup hosts on the brink of a group-stage exit. Forlan's first goal was a deflected 25-yard effort and the second came from the penalty spot late on after an incident which saw South Africa goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune sent off.Alvaro Pereira than wrapped up a deserved victory for dominant Uruguay in stoppage time as the South Americans moved onto four points in Group A and within touching distance of a place in the last 16.

Africa's second red card-KAITA nigeria

With Nigeria up 1-0 after an early goal, Kaita and Torosidis came together in an awkward clash as they both chased down a wayward ball and Torosidis collected it for a throw in. Torosidis made like he was going to shove the ball at Kaita, who almost reflexively kicked out at the Greek defender, grazing his leg with his foot. Well, Torosidis made the most of it and went to the ground with dramatic flair to make sure the referee saw what happened. He did and Kaita was sent off. (yahoo)

Brazil 2-1 N. Korea: 2010 world cup

A Great Wall of North Korea proved tough for the Samba Kings to break through. It's important to note that N. Korean is the last rank team in this world cup while Brazil is the first. Samba footwork was evident. The first half ended without a goal, and from the look of things; Brazil was missing someone who could unlock such a defence-RONALDINHO! North Korea disturbed the peace at Rio Jan, and Maicon(Inter milan) struck at 55' to tell them something. The goal created perforations on the Korean defence and the SAMBATTACKS begun! Robinho turned provider to Elano who struck in the 72' minute making it 2-0 for the Cristo Redentor men. The morale of the North K. seemed to be fading out after that second goal as they begun ball-watching. Although 2 down, they stilled pushed and got a reward via a goal from Ji Yun Nam(April 25). The match was historic and Korea proved that they are not a team that backs down. Final score Brazil 2-1 North Korea.

No other win for Africa yet!

It all happened at the Mandela bay with action picking up at a very fast pace. The game experienced some tense moment when Ronaldo apparently dived at the danger zone, he was confronted by Didier Zakora for the same and both earned themselves yellow cards. Both teams showcased very good game experiences, but none struck the net in the first match. Ivory coast had the better part of the first match, but the Portuguese defence proved a great wall. A goal was almost witnessed when a strike from the world's most expensive player C. Ronaldo hit the crossbar. Second half came, with Ivory Coast showing its intentions of scoring evident from the time go with Solomon Kalou (Chelsea) and Gervinho(Lille) leading the strikes but still nothing. Deco almost nailed it but was stopped by the GK Boubacar Barry (Lokeren). The love for Drogba was felt with the vuvuzelas blowing louder when if came on at the 65 minute when if came in for Kalou. He almost nailed it too at the 90+ minute but opted to pass and nobody was there to just tap it in. Final score 0-0 with Africa proud to have a team like this one, even though they never won.

Reid saves New Zealand as they draw with Slovakia at stoppage time

The game started at a rather low key with both teams seeming comfortable and reluctant to attack. But as the game went on and slovakia seemed to have their guns turned on with numerous attacks on the whites, but their goalkeeper Mark Paston did well to keep the ball from kissing the net upto the halftime mark. Only after five minutes after the two teams had returned from the break, Slovakia's Robert Vittek (Ankaragucu) headed in to put coach Vladimir Weiss's boys ahead at the 50' minute. New Zealand seemed to have lost hope and ideas up to that point. Vittek came close again @ the 70+ minute, but finishing this time was poor, he later have way to Miroslav Stoch (Chelsea) @ 83'. All whites' Tony Lochhead(Wellington Phoenix), did some notable work for his team, but none bore fruits. It was not until the final minute of added time that a defender Winston Reid(FC Midtjylland) scored the equalizer for New Newzealand. Final score 1-1!

Italy draws with Paraguay!

The game started at the fastest momentum ever although some physical was witnessed. All hell broke lose on the Italian side when a corner kick saw Alcaraz head in to give paraguay the lead. The game goes on and it was until after the half time mark when Azzuri got the equalizer, Italy returned more keen on getting the equalizer goal which they did io the 63' minute via Derossi header from a corner kick. Italy tried to prove why they are the defending champions but failed the game ending with a one all draw. Well, a heading affair if you ask me.

It's our world cup- day 3 highlights

DAY3 Briefs of South Africa 2010 FIFA world cup (its our world cup)
The day started at a rather disappointment to the host continent as Algeria’s Desert Foxes failed to tame Slovenia up to the last 78’ when the lone goal of the match came in from Robert Koren at the Peter Mokaba stadium, although they had full ball possession and seemed to be in control. The game was dull and neither teams really showcased what a match of such caliber should entail, with very few chances of goal scoring being created. The winner came after the African side was reduced to ten men, with a red card flashed out on Ghezzal’s face for handling the ball. Ghezzal had come in as sub and in a minute, he had earned himself a yellow that transformed into a red card when he handled the ball. the damage was done in the 78’ minute after which Slovenia closed shop leaving the fennecs foxes wandering with a one-nil lose on their necks…….this is the first time since 1986 that Algeria has been into the world cup. (it's our world cup)

Letting the ghosts to lie, another Mama Africa’s kid-Ghana- stepped in to see who would suck the mom's breast first with Serbia. It all happened at the Loftus Versfeld stadium Pretoria, in a very tense scrappy affair. Ghana proved to be the better side with creation of chances witnessed now and again to but none kissed the net. I must say that Serbia had good shock absorbers and seemed relaxed even after a series of attacks, with Ghana planning another and another missile-throw. Aleksandar Lukovic was sent off the 74’. The game continued as usual with Asamoh Gyan proving a point why he is a Black Star now and again coming close but nailing it a few inches away. Then came the historic 83’ minute-which will go down into history books- when a Zakumi miracle made sure that the better side had to win. A foolish hand handle from defender Zdravko Kuzmanovic saw a penalty awarded to the Black Stars. And guess who came for it, GYAN himself. He stood still. Took note of the keeper’s position. Calculated and flashed it in giving Africa her first win of her tourney as he sent the Keeper the wrongest way. The vuvuzelas were loud and the cheers were evident. THEY MADE MAMA AFRICA PROUD! What followed next was all fans waiting, watching as the four minutes of normal time melted down, and an additional three minutes watched keenly. The final score Africa 1-Serbia 0. (it' s our time)

The final match was the cracker of the day with Germany sending red signals to all that watched them play. They trashed Australia 4-0 in what I will call a no sweat game. History has a way of repeating itself with Germany's having it that in the last six tournaments they have never lost their opening match. They were too fast for the Australians, immunized and played like a team with passes landing on the correct feet. Lucas Podolski struck first, the Miroslav Klose hit the second, Thomas Muller netted the third while the sub Cacau confirmed their win with a fourth. Let the truth be said; AUSTRALIA WAS TOTALLY OUTPLAYED and what remained of them was casing shadow now and then. Nevertheless, they still pushed and had a couple of chance created. The Nazis without their capital C Michael Ballack still proved to the world why you would hear the name Germany and freeze as the tournament gains momentum. It would have been even ten nil, but let Ausis thank their gods fro new as they prepare to meet my African's finest, THE BLACK STARS (it's our time)

Algeria is in a not in a very bad position and considering that US and England drew. they bottom placed in the group but with only a point separating the and the next two (England and US) some mathematics can come in to help the qualify for the next round. the better placed African side are the Black Stars and with either need two draws or one win to "FULLY" qualify for the next round. which is rather achievable looking at their level of play and that of Australia which they are meeting next (its our world cup)
